Big parties want clear limits to homophobia

It is time to put clear limits on homophobic attacks. All major parties, except the SVP, argued on Thursday for the anti-homophobia standard put to the vote on February 9.

According to the PS, the PLR, the PDC, the Greens and the Liberal Greens, this new standard makes it possible to fill a legal gap. The law currently only protects individuals, not a group.

Today, we can call hatred against homosexuals without fear of consequences, said national councilor Damien Cottier (PLR / NE). The same statements against ethnic or religious minorities are punishable.

The homosexual community must also be protected from these hate speeches. The extension of the anti-racist standard will not prevent debates or discussions between friends. Freedom of expression is guaranteed. But the calls for hatred do not represent an opinion, said the national councilor Mathias Reynard (PS / VS), at the origin of the initiative.

Hate speech and physical attacks are frequent, said the Valaisan returning to the attacks in Zurich on December 31. Violence against LGBT + people is significantly above average. Insults and harassment are taking their toll.

According to a study from the University of Zurich, 20% of homosexuals have attempted suicide in Switzerland. The anti-homophobia standard is also a prevention of these acts, recalls the national councilor Sibel Arslan (Greens / BS).
