Joe Biden has another important win in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. According to initial forecasts, the former vice president under Barack Obama won the Democratic primary in Mississippi and Missouri as well as in the important primary state of Michigan, and thus prevailed against his strongest competitor Bernie Sanders, who now has little chance.
Primaries were also held in Idaho, North Dakota and Washington. The voting spanned several time zones. With the Republicans, who also held primaries on Tuesday, the result was almost certain: US President Donald Trump has no serious competition within the party. He could count on overwhelming results again.

Biden (77) had a surprising winning streak last week in the most important pre-election day, the “Super Tuesday”, with primaries in 14 states, and Sanders (78) had overtaken the rank as favorite in national surveys. The current election day is the second most important station in the US pre-election campaign calendar and is therefore often referred to as “Super Tuesday II”.

Biden had received public support from several moderate Democrats who had dropped out of the presidential race in the past few days. Most recently, former applicant Kamala Harris and Senator Cory Booker, who also got out, also sided with him – they flanked him on Monday in Detroit. Harris’ and Booker’s support could again give Biden a little boost, especially among African-American voters.
In the state of Washington, which has been hardest hit in the United States so far, voting is largely done by postal vote anyway. Because of the voting procedure, it could take days to get results. Biden and Sanders had canceled their last campaign appearances because of the virus.
