Biden warns Putin against ‘tough measures’ in Russian attack | Abroad

Biden also reiterated US support for the territorial integrity of Russia’s neighbor Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels control a large area. He called on Putin to ease tensions through diplomatic means. According to the White House, both world leaders have ordered their employees to work on this. The White House also announced that Biden will brief the leaders of France, Britain, Italy and Germany about the talks. He also plans to contact Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Biden and Putin also discussed ransomware, Iran cooperation and strategic stability, the White House said. The consultations were not in the least intended to prevent the extremely difficult relationship between the two superpowers from deteriorating further.

Troops along the border

Biden had already announced that he would make it “very difficult” for Putin. Moscow denies plans to attack Ukraine and insists on its right to deploy troops domestically without foreign interference.

The two leaders also clearly disagree on a range of other issues. For example, Moscow is demanding that the Western alliance NATO should not be extended further towards Russia. Washington accuses the Russians of helping neighboring Belarus send migrants from the Middle East to the European Union. The Americans also demand that Russians not use their gas supplies as a political weapon and put pressure on countries that depend on the gas.

The United States will supply arms to Ukraine if Russia decides to invade the country. In that case, the Americans will also provide their Eastern European NATO allies with additional weapons. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday.
