MARK GITTENSTEIN
–
US President Joe Biden has nominated former Romanian Ambassador Mark Gittenstein to represent the United States in the European Union, AFP reported. He headed the mission in Bucharest during the term of former President Barack Obama between 2009 and 2012. He used his post to increase pressure against acts of abuse of power and in support of privatization in Romania, according to AFP.
Gittenstein was the first ambassador of Romanian descent to be appointed a senior US diplomat in Bucharest.
His grandfather emigrated to the United States from
the Romanian city of Botosani
at the end of the XIX century.
Joe Biden, who, unlike his presidential predecessor, Donald Trump, has always been an EU supporter, has vowed to strengthen relations with the United States’ allies.
The news of the nomination of the 74-year-old Gittenstein was announced against the background of the attempts of the American government to strengthen its ties with the EU, notes AFP.
Mark Gittenstein is a lawyer by education and a lawyer by profession. For 17 years, he served in various positions in the Senate of the US Congress, Reuters notes. He was also a member of the team of advisers who prepared for the transition to power earlier this year after Joe Biden was elected in the US presidential election last year.
His candidacy will be considered by the Senate.
Joe Biden, meanwhile, boasted that American intelligence was better than Russian and said Putin was “facing a real problem.” “He runs an economy that
has nuclear weapons
and oil wells and with
nothing else. Nothing more
What kind of economy do they have at all, the eighth smallest in the world right now, isn’t it the biggest? He knows he’s facing a real problem, which I think makes it even more dangerous, “Biden said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was as if Biden, who delivered a speech during a visit to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, had deliberately adapted his message to the country’s intelligence community and wanted to impress it. According to the Kremlin, the statement of the American president is far from the truth and shows ignorance of the country, Reuters reported.
Peskov said the United States is a rival to Russia, although action is being taken to stabilize strained relations. Senior US and Russian officials began talks on strategic nuclear stability in Geneva yesterday.
A Kremlin spokesman also dismissed Biden’s claims that Russia was already interfering in the 2022 US midterm elections.
