Biden responds to China lockdown demo

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaUnited States (USA) President Joe Biden responds to demonstrations in China. He is said to have monitored protests that ended in riots demanding an end to the Covid-19 lockdown and called for more political freedom.

This was confirmed by a spokesman for the National Security Council John Kirby. “He monitors, all of us,” she allegedly said AFP extensionTuesday (11/29/2022).

He said the bottom line was that Biden would not speak up for protesters everywhere. Individuals, she says, can speak for themselves.

But he, Kirby said, emphasized US support for protesters’ rights.

“People should have the right to gather and peacefully protest the policies, laws or orders they contest,” he said.

Meanwhile, demonstrations have sprung up on US campuses in support of the protests in China. About 100 people, mostly students, gathered in Washington to demand more freedoms and mourn the dead in Urumqi, Xinjiang.

“(Officials) have borrowed the pretext of Covid, but they have used a very strict lockdown to control the Chinese population. They ignore human life,” said a Chinese student surnamed Chen.

“I came here to cry,” the 21-year-old added.

Demos also took place in New York. These include the Columbia University campus and Duke University North Carolina.

Dozens of people also gathered on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley chanting “Xi Jinping, retire” in Mandarin. There were also English chants of “Free China” as a protester was seen carrying a photo of Xi with the slogan “Death to the dictator”.

China itself has not commented on this.
