The White House is not considering the option of introducing sanctions against the Russian gas pipeline under President Biden.
US President Joe Biden has no plans to impose sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The administration is not considering such options during his presidency. Politico with reference to sources.
The publication writes that the Biden administration does not intend to impose sanctions, as Congress and Republican Senator Ted Cruz are seeking. In particular, Cruz is delaying the approval of seven American ambassadors and thus trying to achieve the introduction of measures against Nord Stream-2.
Politico, citing two sources, notes that the White House contacted the senator, who stressed that the Biden administration was legally empowered to impose sanctions. In response, the White House made it clear that no sanctions would be imposed during Biden’s presidency.
Note that the United States imposed sanctions against several companies participating in the Nord Stream 2 project, but not against the operator. Washington believes that more radical measures could worsen relations with Germany.
Earlier, the State Department stated that Washington will continue to comply with sanctions legislation against the gas pipeline.
