The virtual Democratic candidate for the US Presidency, Joe Biden, on Tuesday criticized the country’s president, Donald Trump, whom he accused of having “surrendered” and “failed” Americans facing the pandemic of the COVID-19.
“What has happened? It is almost July now and it seems that our wartime president has surrendered, brandished the white flag and left the battlefield,” Biden said in a speech from a high school in Wilmington (Delaware, EE.UU.).
The one who was vice president during the two terms of Barack Obama (2009-2017) used the same metaphor that Trump himself used in March when he declared himself a wartime president in the fight against the coronavirus.
The Democratic candidate assured that month after month many, like him, have asked Trump to take action and do his job: “He has failed us,” he settled.
“We cannot continue like this, half wearing masks, half refusing directions,” he added. “We cannot continue half with a plan, half hoping for the best.”
In that sense, Biden regretted that the Trump government has left the decision to reopen their economies and other pandemic issues to state and local authorities.
“We need real plans, real recommendations, with national and uniform standards, to help chart our economic reopening. What we have been doing now is not functional. The state-by-state approach will only lead to confusion and slow down any progress,” he said.
Biden said there should be a federal recommendation that “everyone should wear a mask in public, period.”
“Wearing a mask is not just about you, it is about your family, it is about your neighbors, it is about your colleagues, it is about keeping other people safe,” he said.
The presidential candidate pointed out that if Trump He would have listened to the health experts and the recommendations that he himself made a few months ago the pandemic would not have grown so quickly.
“It shouldn’t have been this way,” said Biden.
The latest polls show Biden as the winner in the elections on November 3.
A poll published last Friday indicated that Trump is at the lowest point of his approval, 40%, after the racial protests and the cases of police mistreatment that occurred in the United States and amid a rebound in the coronavirus infections in the country.
The president has 58% disapproval, according to a survey by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion (MIPO, in English) in alliance with the National Public Radio (NPR) and PBS NewsHour.
The United States is the country in the world most affected by the pandemic, with more than 2.6 million confirmed cases and more than 126,000 deaths, according to data from the Universidad Johns Hopkins.
