Bicycle Sales Trend Increases Rapidly, Transportation Equipment IKM Steer Steering

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The trend of bicycle sales during the Covid-19 pandemic increased significantly.

Seeing this trend, small and medium-sized industries (IKM) of transportation equipment have begun to explore the production of bicycle components as a substitute for import needs.

“Mid-2020, bicycle sales have increased by four times compared to last year’s sales. This is a great opportunity for our IKM, including the transportation equipment sector, to be able to contribute,” said the Director General of Small, Medium and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA). Ministry of Industry Gati Wibawaningsih through a written statement, Sunday (11/15/2020).

Gati said, the government encourages transportation equipment IKM to produce bicycle frames as one of the main components.

However, in making the bicycle frame, proper welding techniques are needed to ensure the safety of the rider.

“For this reason, through a training program for transportation equipment IKM, we provide technical guidance on welding. We have carried out this activity for transport tool SMIs in Tasikmalaya Regency some time ago, “said Gati.

In addition, continued Gati, the Ministry of Industry carried out a program of activities that were believed to be able to increase demand for IKM products in Indonesia.

Next, facilitation of machines and equipment, assistance of experts, and facilitation of product certification and HR competencies.

“The transportation equipment industry is a sector that has a big role in the national economy,” added Gati.

This can be seen from the investment value in this sector which reached IDR 8.39 trillion in 2019 or is included in the top five industrial sectors with the largest investment value after the food industry, metal industry, and chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
