BH90210 (TF1), the satire that will delight those nostalgic for Beverly Hills

In the “Where are they now?” », The answers are rather disappointing concerning the cast of Beverly Hills. Created in 1990 by Darren Star (to whom we will later owe Sex and the City), the teen show propelled its young actors to the height of fame, before they knew the setbacks of success. Impossible then for Jason Priestley (alias Brandon) or the late Luke Perry (interpreter of Dylan) to take a few steps without being assailed by the groupies, while Shannen Doherty (Brenda) made the headlines for her diva behavior. Centered on the turpitudes of a bunch of teenagers from a chic high school in California, the series has been a phenomenon even in France, where its ten seasons were broadcast on TF1. The same channel which, this July 29, unveils BH90210, where all the actors play their own role.BH90210 is not really a sequel, but rather a pastiche blurring the lines between fiction and reality, launched in the summer last on Fox. Cleverly riding nostalgia, the series imagines the lives of comedians, 19 years after the series ended, as they meet for a fan convention in Las Vegas. A reunion that pushes them to set up a project together: to stage a reboot of the show that made them successful, produced by Tori Spelling (Donna) and Jennie Garth (Kelly), and directed by Jason Priestley. Unsurprisingly, egos heat up and unfinished stories from the past resurface. While BH90210 is not meant to be a documentary, it brilliantly enjoys the image of its performers. In life as on the screen, Tori Spelling – yet daughter of the brilliant producer Aaron Spelling – has chained the reality TV shows to bail out the coffers, after having squandered the fortune of her father. Ian Ziering performed well in Sharknado, David Austin Green (then a couple with Megan Fox) is married to a celebrity, while Shannen Doherty continues to irritate his former colleagues. Gabrielle Carteris’ storyline, referencing her character Andrea Zuckerman’s status as a gay icon, is one of the few surprises that really works. Diluted meta paraphernalia in a soap opera vibe, because the show knows who it is. address. The themes of early fame, the pangs of returning to anonymity, and all the associated vices (addictions, depression, ruin, etc.) are never fully explored. Choosing the easy way is the best way not to put your performers in a vulnerable situation. Failing to be interested in the existential torments of these ex-celebrities, to offer a touch of emotion (present only during the homage to Luke Perry), the writers prefer to privilege humor and lightness. As a result, the self-mockery act sometimes turns to ridicule, as improbable plots accumulate (including a stalker story). You have to take BH90210 for what it is: guilty pleasure assumed, with strong winks, and a few gags and lines that hit the mark. In short, a good nostalgic trip against a backdrop of Californian decor.
