Have you ever heard of PFAS? They are toxic substances present on the planet at all levels. Very dangerous for health because they have accumulated in the body and in the environment for more than 80 years, with consequences that have become dangerous for health.
What are the PFAS
This is how EFSA puts it (European Food Safety Authority): “PFAS have been produced and used since the 1940s all over the world, in various types of industrial applications. Some PFAS like PFOA and PFOS, PFNA and PFHxS do not break down in the environment or in the human body and can accumulate over time. Exposure to PFAS can cause adverse health effects. People can be exposed to PFAS in a number of ways, and one of them is food. Food can be contaminated by polluted soil and water used to grow it; from PFAS concentrated in the organism of animals through feed and water; from food packaging containing PFAS; or even from equipment containing PFAS during food processing “.
In food, they are found mainly in drinking water, fish, fruit, eggs and egg products. But they are produced in various industries and types of products: textiles, household products, fire-fighting products, automotive, food, construction, electronics.
Beware these substances are extremely dangerous. What are the categories at risk?
“According to EFSA’s exposure assessment, infants, toddlers and other children are the most exposed. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the main factors contributing to infant exposure ”.
How does food become contaminated with PFAS?
“Foods can become contaminated by the contaminated land or water used to grow them; from PFAS concentrated in the organism of animals through feed and water; from food packaging containing PFAS; or even from equipment containing PFAS used for food processing “.
We add that the PFAS, as we have already said in a recent article, are very stable and hardly decay. A danger that has accumulated over the years. For this reason we must be careful these substances are extremely dangerous
