Beware of Sleep Apnea, Stop Breathing While Sleeping

JAKARTA – There are many sleep problems or disorders that can occur, starting from insomnia, hypersomnia to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by abnormal breathing while sleeping.

In people with sleep apnea, they experience stopping breathing several times while they are asleep. Of course, stopping breathing makes the quality of sleep decrease and has an impact on decreasing oxygen supply in the body.

There are two types sleep apnea, that is obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. On obstructive sleep apnea, usually the airway is blocked, so that breathing becomes disturbed and there is stopping breathing during sleep.

While, central sleep apnea occurs because there is a problem in the work system of the brain that controls the muscles in the respiratory tract, thus making breathing slower and shallower.

“Sleep apnea can make us wake up not refreshed, we feel sleepy during the day, and the quality of sleep decreases. The reason is because when we have stopped breathing, we will wake up without being awake all the time,” explained dr. Andreas Prasadja, RPSGT from Snoring and Sleep Disorder Clinic, Mitra Kemayoran Hospital in the Royal Philips ‘Chasing Dreams in the Middle of a Pandemic’, Tuesday (16/3).

One of the hallmarks of sleep apnea is snoring. However, not everyone snoring means suffering sleep apnea. Because there is also a snoring condition due to fatigue.

Therefore, do a sudden check you experience the habit of snoring for a long time and occurs continuously.

As already stated, sleep apnea promotes sleep quality. Poor sleep quality can trigger the body’s immune system. If a person’s sleep quality is poor, the inflammatory cells in the body will increase.

One of the worst things about the increase in inflammatory cells is the occurrence of a cytokine storm. And in the midst of a pandemic like this, it will certainly worsen the existing situation.

For this reason, if you often experience stopping breathing during sleep, immediately check with your doctor. Later the doctor will perform tests of sleep, breath, and heart activity.

If a problem is found, the doctor will recommend using the patient’s treatment Continous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which helps the patient to inhale the oxide for a while.

Even though this tool is easy to find, dr. Andreas still recommends that patients check themselves with a doctor first. It is intended that doctors can provide appropriate treatment, followed by how the existing arrangements are in the CPAP. So that patients can get the right and effective treatment to overcome sleep apnea which he experienced. (Gemma Fitri Purbaya)
