Beware, Consumption of Vitamin D Supplements with High Doses Can Cause Poisoning

Suara.com – Since coronavirus pandemic occurs, experts recommend people to consume supplement additionally to protect against the spread of Covid-19. One of the recommended supplements is vitamin D.

However, taking vitamin D can also cause side effects. Especially if consumed in excess or take high doses.

This is because vitamin D is fat soluble. That is, it can accumulate in the body’s fat stores to reach toxic levels, reports Insider.

To avoid poisoning vitamin D, most adults should not take more than 4,000 IU per day.

Integrative medicine specialist at Providence St. Jude Medical Center, Rajsree Nambudripad, MD, says people who take vitamin D supplements should have their blood levels checked every three to six months.

The range of vitamin D concentrations in healthy blood is between 60 and 80 ng/ml. So, one should stop taking this vitamin supplement if the level exceeds 100 ng/ml.

“That’s when side effects may appear,” says Nambudripad.

Vitamin D poisoning can cause symptoms:

  • Nauseous
  • Gag
  • Stomach ache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weak body
  • Excessive thirst and urination
  • Kidney stone formation
  • Confusion
  • Painful

Fortunately, Spectrum Health internist Erin McNeely says vitamin D poisoning is rare.

“Generally you have to take large amounts of vitamin D every day before you experience the toxic side effects,” says McNeely.
