Bette Westera has a collection of poems Apart won the Gouden Griffel for best children’s book of 2020. The prize was not awarded during the Children’s Book Ball this year, but the winner was surprised by it at home NOS Youth News.

Westera already won the Woutertje Pieterse Prize for this earlier this year Apart, which contains poems about the end of relationships and divorces from parents. It is the second time that the author has won the Gouden Griffel. In 2015 she received the prize for her book Ordinary.

Yvonne Jagtenberg received the Gouden Penseel for the best illustrated children’s book of 2020 with Go Herman! It is the second year in a row that she has received the award. Last year became her book My wonderful uncle voted best.

The prizes were awarded by two different juries, including teachers, booksellers, librarians and critics.

The prizes are awarded every year at the start of the children’s book week. Normally this is done during the Children’s Book Ball, which could not take place this year due to the corona virus. The children’s book week, this year with the theme And then?, will last until October 11.
