Bet on the Hospital of Medina del Campo? | La Voz de Medina – News from Medina del Campo and the Region

Editorial

The situation of the Hospital of Medina del Campo is something that is always questioned, both from a political and citizen point of view, as well as from the health sector that sees how the deterioration of some services demanded by the population has suffered for years.

And it is that it is a hospital that was born after one of the most remembered manifestations in the Villa de las Ferias, which managed to provide professional and modern health services to an area that includes Medina del Campo itself, along with the health areas from Alaejos, Olmedo, Serrada and Íscar.

However, for years we have observed how this hospital center experiences its traditional closures of its surgery floor in summer, to which have been added the temporary loss of tests for the analysis and prevention of breast cancer, and even the outsourcing of some radiological tests, in this case for sick leave that have not yet been covered by management, which is still looking for these professionals.

Castilla y León has some of the best hospitals in all of Spain, but from medium-sized populations we cannot stop looking suspiciously at how some services are outsourced to large capital cities, while the Hospital de Medina del Campo itself does not even have an Intensive Care Unit service.

With the COVID19 pandemic, we have been able to verify -in many cases by private companies- how administrative services can function efficiently and how telework helps not only to work-life balance, but also to the productivity of some workers. Thus, it is possible that some of these administrations may be centralized, since “office” work can be carried out without major inconveniences with an online platform.

This is not the case in health services, as the closeness and treatment between people is something that cannot be compared to a review through a call. The situation of the pandemic forces this now, but it will not be something that should be extended beyond the pandemic, since citizens must have decent services in a close environment.

The time has come when community Health Councils must choose how to offer their services, with large hospitals in capital cities, or with their own services in medium-sized towns.
