Consumer Reports: Two laundry Brands Stand Out for Performance and Health
PARIS – amid growing consumer concern over harsh chemicals in laundry detergents, a new investigation by 60 million Consumers magazine reveals significant disparities in product quality and safety. While many popular brands received failing grades, two references – Maison Verte Bioactive liquid laundry detergent and Xéor pods from E. Leclerc – earned top marks for both effectiveness and minimal health impact.
The report found that pod-format detergents generally outperformed liquid formulations, often due to simpler compositions and fewer preservatives. Maison Verte Bioactive liquid laundry detergent achieved a score of 14/20, lauded for its cleaning power and low toxicity. However, the Xéor pods from E.Leclerc took first place with a score of 15/20, demonstrating that effective laundry cleaning doesn’t require compromising health.
The investigation highlighted that several well-known brands received an “E” grade – the lowest on the magazine’s scale – including Omo natural essences and Parsley Marseille soap, due to the presence of substances like thiazolinones or sodium laureth sulfate. As the cost of living rises, the findings come as consumers increasingly seek safer and more economical alternatives, including making their own laundry detergent using ingredients like Marseille soap, baking soda, and essential oils.
