Bernried – referendum stopped – Starnberg

The initiative to petition “Bernried’s nature preserve” gives up. They wanted to prevent the sale of the forest nursery site on the Reitweg because they saw biodiversity and the landscape there at risk. But now the initiators believe that there is no longer any prospect of success. “If we were to submit the referendum, it is very questionable whether the necessary 400 yes-votes could be achieved in the irritated situation in the actual referendum,” explain Michael Haberl, Elisabeth Rind-Schmidt and Anja Freckmann in a letter to their supporters.

You would have needed at least 200 signatures to start the request. At the moment, however, there are only “just under 200”, as Michael Haberl said in the latest meeting. Although only a few signatures were missing, write the initiators, there are other reasons for the withdrawal. In their opinion, the community has successfully managed to present the sale of land as a condition for buying a monastery. The request was almost only perceived as a threat to the monastery project, they justify their step and thank all supporters who had kept the actual concern of the request in mind “in the excited and at times distorted discussion”.

With the sale of the area in the best hillside location on Grundweiher, the assisted living project is to be financed, which the community is building together with the Tutzing outpatient nursing service. The community has been negotiating with potential investors for months. Should the property deal fail, Bernried would have to take out the necessary four million euros for the senior citizens’ living as a loan. According to the municipality, this would mean that its creditworthiness would be exhausted. So she would not get any more credit for the monastery purchase.

The “Bernried Nature Preserve” initiative, in which members of the Greens and the “Bernried Man and Nature List” are represented, sees things differently. She no longer wants to accept “the practice that has been common for decades of selling parish land to finance other projects”. “We think it is time to look for new ways to finance community projects,” they explain. Suggestions have already been made. But her wish to seriously look for alternative financing options for senior living was only partially met.

Another reason for stopping the desire is the initiators’ fear that there could be a social division in the village. According to her, some of Bernried’s citizens have been “put under social pressure” to withdraw their signature for the request. One does not want to support this approach. According to the initiators, another motivation is the fears of the Missionary Benedictines that the sale of the monastery could fail. The initiators write that they have complied with the wish of the monastery sisters to get rid of the “alleged blockade scenario”. However, they want to pursue their goals, according to which concrete criteria are to be defined in Bernried as to how a sustainable building and property policy can be implemented.
