Bentley Continental GT Speed

The engine type in the new Bentley is becoming increasingly rare

Bentley still delivers a 12-cylinder engine, as in the new Continental GT Speed, but it will hardly last.

According to Bentley, the new Continental GT Speed is the most performance-focused model ever in the company’s 101-year history. The performance is provided by the now famous six-liter W12 engine with twin turbo, which in this case is tuned to deliver 650 horsepower and a torque of 900 Nm.

The top speed is terrifying 335 km / h and it should reach 0-100 km / h in 3.6 seconds. The forces are handled as before by an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which in Sport mode shifts twice as fast as in the regular W12 model.

Four-wheel steering

When you read that it has newly developed carbon-ceramic brakes behind 22-inch rims, it is perhaps easy to think that these are rigid cases.

But not in a Bentley. It has air suspension with three chambers and electronically controlled stabilizer bars. It has four-wheel steering, which means that the rear wheels steer the opposite way of the front wheels at lower speeds, which improves maneuverability. In addition, the first is the Bentley with an electronic limited slip differential on the rear axle.

Towards the end of W12

There are not many car models anymore that are produced with a 12-cylinder engine, and there are many indications that it is also coming to an end for the W12 engine that Bentley uses. From 2026, the company will only sell plug-in hybrids and electric cars, and completely electric from 2030. Some W12 in plug-in configuration are out of the question.

– We will not make a plug-in hybrid with 12 cylinders, says Bentley boss Adrian Hallmark to Top Gear.

– The reason for that is a lot. Making room for a 250 kilo battery in the heaviest car we have will be a massive challenge, says Hallmark.
