Bengals Explore Quarterback Options Following Joe Burrow‘s Injury
The Cincinnati Bengals began contacting free agent quarterbacks shortly after Joe Burrow sustained a wrist injury during Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according too ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Burrow is now confirmed to undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right wrist adn is expected to miss at least three months.
This proactive approach signals the Bengals are preparing for a potentially extended absence of their star quarterback. While Jake Browning finished Sunday’s game and Brett Rypien is on the practice squad, the team is evaluating all available options to ensure stability at the position as they navigate a challenging stretch of the season. The Bengals’ success hinges on finding a capable replacement for Burrow, whose injury significantly impacts their playoff aspirations.
Among the free agents contacted is Desmond Ridder, who participated in the Bengals’ training camp earlier this year. Othre quarterbacks reportedly considered include Mike White, taylor Heinicke, Kyle Trask, and Nate Sudfeld. The team is also exploring potential trades and the possibility of signing players from other teams’ practice squads.
Kirk Cousins, currently a backup for the Atlanta Falcons, is a name expected to surface in trade discussions. Jameis Winston (New York Giants), Case Keenum (Chicago Bears), Sam Howell, and Tanner McKee (Philadelphia Eagles) represent potential trade targets, though it remains unclear if their respective teams would be willing to part with their quarterbacks mid-season.
