Benfica said Darwin Nuñez had an operation on his right knee this Monday.
«The athlete Darwin Nuñez underwent an arthroscopy to his right knee, this afternoon, at Hospital da Luz, accompanied by the medical team from Sport Lisboa e Benfica. The surgery was uneventful, with hospital discharge scheduled for tomorrow and the recovery process starting immediately ”, says the note published by the red emblem.
The Uruguayan international was used as substitute (he entered the 57th minute) in the final of the Portuguese Cup, which Benfica lost to Sporting de Braga on Sunday.
However, to what the Morefootball found out, this operation has nothing to do with any injury suffered in Coimbra. It was something scheduled for the end of the season, in order to solve a problem that had been going on for some time, and which, besides, had already led the coach, Jorge Jesus, to reveal that the player was physically limited.
This way, Darwin will miss Uruguay’s selection for this year’s Copa America.
The final of the Portuguese Cup was the 44th game of the striker in his debut season in Portugal, in which he scored 14 goals.
