Belinda Bencic, last mum remaining, breaks through at Wimbledon

Grass Court Queen: **Bencic** Powers into Quarterfinals

Despite surprising upsets throughout the Championships, the women’s quarterfinal lineup showcases top-tier talent. Among the contenders, **Belinda Bencic** stands out as a formidable force on the grass.

Triumph After Setbacks

**Belinda Bencic** has made a remarkable return to professional tennis, currently ranked 35th after being unranked last October due to a 13-month break. This comeback follows her journey as a new mother.

The 2013 Wimbledon junior champion has consistently demonstrated an affinity for grass courts. In fact, she has secured 50 tour-level match wins on grass, which is more than any other female quarterfinalist this year. Her winning rate on the surface is nearly 70 percent.

Eyeing the Prize

Before her quarterfinal match against Mirra Andreeva, the former Eastbourne champion, **Bencic**, can be confident in her record of winning six of her seven career grass-court quarterfinals. She nearly achieved an eighth grass-court quarterfinal at Wimbledon in 2023. However, Iga Swiatek managed a comeback on Centre Court to stop her.

According to recent data, female tennis players peak in performance around the age of 27 (NIH Study, 2019). At 27 years old, Bencic’s experience and skill on grass may give her a distinct advantage.

Confident Mindset

“I’m happy I finally got through today from the fourth round; I always got stuck in the fourth round,” she laughed in a Tennis Channel interview. “I’m really happy with how I played better from round to round and I’m improving on the court, so I hope to continue like that.”

Top Contenders

Among the other players who have made it to the quarterfinals are multiple Grand Slam champions **Aryna Sabalenka** and **Iga Swiatek**, and fellow top-eight seed Mirra Andreeva.

**Amanda Anisimova**, whom pundits predicted would be a semifinalist, has advanced to the last eight. Also competing for the title is Liudmila Samsonova, a two-time WTA tournament champion on grass, and 2021 Roland Garros finalist **Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova**.

With her experience and confidence on grass, **Bencic** could be a difficult opponent for anyone in the quarterfinals.
