Belgian teacher suspended after showing naked Mohammed cartoon in class | Abroad

A primary school teacher in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek has been suspended because he showed an inappropriate cartoon in class. The cabinet of Mayor Catherine Moureaux (PS) confirms this to Het Laatste Nieuws. The teacher showed a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad naked. “The nudity was the problem, not the figure. You don’t show naked drawings to 11-year-old children. ”

Last week, the management of Ecole 11 primary school received complaints from parents about the cartoon that was shown in class. “The teacher wanted to pay attention to freedom of speech,” said Mayor Moureaux’s spokesman. “The way he did that was unfortunately unfortunate. The cartoon he showed was obscene. Showing eleven-year-olds a drawing with ‘intimate body parts’ does not seem like the way to present the subject. ”

Yellow star

According to the French-language newspaper The last hour, which came out with the news, the teacher showed a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad on all fours, with a yellow star on his buttocks. Above it was written, “A star is born.” Several parents complained to the management when their children told about the lesson at home.

The Molenbeek municipal council then started a disciplinary procedure against the teacher. “Every day in our schools there is attention for themes of freedom of expression and tolerance. But the way in which the subject was introduced in this lesson was not pedagogically justified. ”

The incident brings back memories of the drama surrounding the French teacher Samual Paty. He was born two weeks ago beheaded after showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed during lessons on freedom of expression. The 47-year-old history teacher, according to police, received threats ten days before his death after having conducted a class discussion about the offending drawings.
