Belgian households spend less than 6% of their budget on catering

Belgian households spent 5.7% of their budget on outings to restaurants or cafes in 2018. Belgium is slightly below the European average (7%), according to data provided Wednesday by the European office of statistical.

Eurostat’s first newsletter of the year, on the morrow after the holidays, is therefore devoted to food. If Belgian households are in the second half of the ranking, in Eastern Europe, there seems to be even more emphasis on home cooking. Romanians spend only 1.9% of their budget on catering costs (including cafes, street vendors, home deliveries …), Poles 3% and their Lithuanian neighbors 3.4%.

The standard of living does not seem particularly linked to the part devoted to gastronomic outings since the Germans spend only 4.3% in this area.

On the other hand, a sunny climate may encourage a little more to go out to restaurants. Six countries in the Mediterranean basin are thus among the top eight European countries. Spain is 2nd with 13%, Malta 3rd with 12.6%, Greece 4th with 12.4% (2017 data). Portugal (9.2%), Cyprus (9.1%) and Italy (7.8%) ranks 6 to 8.

However, Ireland is at the top of the ranking with 14.4%. It has shown strong growth in ten years (11.5% in 2008) and has succeeded in dethroning Spain which was first in 2008 with 13.8%.
