Each Easter Monday, the small village of Hakendover, near Tirlemont in Flemish Brabant, belgium, hosts a truly unique event: an equestrian procession culminating in a spirited horse race. This tradition draws thousands of spectators, including many from the Netherlands, eager to witness a blend of religious observance and thrilling competition.

A Procession Rooted in History

The Hakendover equestrian procession commemorates the founding of the local church in the 15th century. Participants don period costumes, adding to the past atmosphere. The procession’s centerpiece is the Duke, seated on a throne pulled by a tractor, followed by his court. The destination is Tiense Berg, a local high point.

At the summit of Tiense Berg, the parish priest performs a blessing of the fields, a ritual intended to ensure a bountiful harvest for the region’s farmers.

The Thrill of the Race

the highlight of the day is undoubtedly the horse race. After the blessing, approximately 120 riders gather for a high-speed competition. They gallop around the hotel and thru the assembled crowd three times, creating a spectacle of speed and skill.
