Belgian found dead after swimming in Portugal

The body of the young Belgian who got into trouble during a swim on Friday afternoon has been found. Portuguese media report this.

The maritime emergency services received a report from Vila do Bispo, a municipality in the Faro district on Friday. It is a man walking nearby who sees two swimmers getting into trouble. The two had run into problems in the rocky area off Paraia das Furnas beach.

It turned out to be a German man and a Belgian between 20 and 30 years old. The German still managed to swim back to the beach himself. He did not need medical attention. But the other, in his twenties with both Belgian and Canadian nationality, disappeared into the sea.

The emergency services immediately launched a rescue operation, but when night fell, they had to stop it. This weekend the search continued with boats, but also along the coast and with a helicopter. The man’s body was found west of Boca do Rio beach on Sunday. The police could not yet confirm definitively that it was the missing Belgian, but said he had the same physical characteristics.
