A couple from Kampenhout, a village next to Brussels, became infected with malaria in Belgium at the end of September and died from it.
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is investigating the infections, together with the Agency for Care and Health of the Flemish government.
Airports
Infection by a malaria mosquito is very rare in Flanders. The researchers emphasize that it is almost impossible that other people have also become infected. The mosquito most likely died without reproducing itself.
