Belarusian activist to spend 15 days in solitary confinement – World after speech at opposition rally

Pavel Juhnevich, an activist of the civil campaign “European Belarus”, was arrested in Minsk after a speech at an opposition rally, and a court sentenced him to 15 days in administrative detention.

Juhnevich gave a speech at a rally in Minsk’s Independence Square on Thursday evening.

He was then detained, and on Friday the Moscow Moscow District Court sentenced him to 15 days in custody, European Belarus said.

It is not reported what violation Juhņevičs has been convicted of.

To serve his sentence, Mhnevich was taken to the infamous solitary confinement on Minsk’s Okrestina Street, where detained protesters were tortured.

In a speech at a rally with many thousands of people, 36-year-old Juhnevich called for the protests to continue until victory.

“We are in a situation where we and the former president [Aleksandrs Lukašenko] we understand – if one side loses, it will be the final. If we lose, the country will turn into a concentration camp. If he loses – but he loses – then in his courts, so we must not lose. We have to go to the end! “Said Juhņevičs.

Protests against the falsification of the August 9 presidential election and authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, who have often escalated into protesters’ clashes with security forces, remain unabated in Belarus. Thousands have been detained and several hundred injured in protests. Workers in many state-owned enterprises are on strike.

According to official results, Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, won 80.1% of the vote, while opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovska won 10.1%, but the opposition believes the election results are fake and Tikhanovska has won the election. European Union countries do not recognize election results.
