According to the ministry, Belarusian officials at the Medininkai border checkpoint have demanded the removal of diplomatic seals and the opening of the car. When the Lithuanian diplomatic couriers rejected this request, the car had to return to the territory of Lithuania.
“Detaining a car with diplomatic mail at the state border is a serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Belarus has once again shown that the laws of the civilized world no longer exist for this country. Dictatorship is raging in the center of Europe,” Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsberg said.
On Friday, a representative of the Belarusian embassy was urgently summoned to the Foreign Ministry and a protest note was submitted to him.
In accordance with the Vienna Convention, diplomatic bag must not be opened or detained and diplomatic couriers must ensure the protection and integrity of the host country; they may not be detained or arrested.
