Tobias Burkhalter – host in four Bernese restaurants – praises the canton’s hardship aid. However, this did not cover the fixed costs.

To get money, he needed a pile of paper. Tobias Burkhalter had to submit balance sheets, income statements, debt enforcement documents or extracts from the commercial register – to name just a few – so that he could receive hardship aid from the canton of Bern. Burkhalter is co-owner of Burkhalter Gastromanagement AG, which operates four restaurants and hotels in the city of Bern. He applied for hardship allowance for all four companies.
“But not all restaurants have the necessary documents,” says Burkhalter. “For many small pickles, the VAT from last year has not yet been settled because they work with trustees. We were lucky enough to do everything ourselves. ” Burkhalter was able to apply for hardship allowance from the canton on January 25 – three days after it became possible at all. After that, things went quickly: after just a week, the positive decision came that the Golden Key and the Fähribeizli would receive support from the Canton. Three days later the calculated amount was in the account.
