Being together in Tiguļkalns – the first decade of the tradition of open-air concerts / Article

Outstanding musicians, the oratorio “Jūras grāmata” and the premiere, in which the organ and church bells will be heard – on the evening of August 7, the listeners gathered in Talsi Tiguļkalns will hear it.

Tiguļkalns was first played in 2012. The idea of gathering musicians and listeners for composer Raimonds Tiguls came from playing a hang surrounded by oaks. He calls this annual event a gathering rather than a concert:

“I like the feeling that everyone gets there, there is a performance and then everyone runs away. That’s the process – something so moving in it all. ”

This tradition of gathering is destined to continue for a long time. In the Latvian Radio program “Kultūras rondo”, Tiguls remembers with a smile that last summer a student of the Riga Dome Boys’ Choir had wished him another hundred “Tiguļkalns” concerts. Then the composer promised the boy that there would be a hundred, but then – he would look. It turns out that the performance in Tiguļkalns was the boy’s first concert experience.

This year, at the invitation of the composer, a group of brilliant Latvian performers – organist Iveta Apkalna, pianist Andrejs Osokins, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, State Academic Choir “Latvija” and conductor Māris Sirmais – will perform in Talsi.

Tiguls reminds that the “Sea Book” has already been played in this composition at the opening of the concert hall “Latvija”: “I already had an idea at that time that I would definitely want to hear and play this work in Tiguļkalns as well. Then I gradually started to organize it. [..]

It is a bit of a miracle for these musicians to meet together and make music. ”

There will also be a premiere – Raimonds Tiguls has dedicated the composition “Bright Star” to organist Iveta Apkalns. The score includes the summoning of the organ with the bells of the Talsi Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Admission to the Tiguļkalns open-air concert venue for adults and children will be possible only with a valid Covid-19 certificate (vaccination or illness), which must be presented together with an identity document. The event is free. It will also be available to watch live on Youtube and Facebook.
