Beijing’s streets empty as China’s Covid cases rise again

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – The streets of Beijing were empty on Friday (11/25/2022) as China again recorded a record number of daily cases of Covid-19.

There were more than 32,000 new local cases on Thursday (11/24/2022), breaking the previous record set the previous day.

The authorities of the Chinese capital have imposed confinement to residential areas, and the closure of shops and businesses.

Similar restrictions have been imposed in other cities across China, dashing investor hopes that the country will soon ease its strict zero-Covid policy.

The French Chamber of Commerce in China has asked the authorities to properly enforce the Covid “optimization” rules announced two weeks ago.

The agency said the proposed measures, which include shortening the quarantine period and more targeted measures, raised hopes for more bilateral trade and economic exchanges.

Even some local residents are feeling increasingly frustrated.

“Let’s just hope it gets better, otherwise don’t talk about other people’s lives. People can’t even make a living these days.”

“This (measure) is not effective. It really involves everyone’s interest. If this continues, there may be problems with access to food, and this will be serious,” said one resident.

Elsewhere in China, at the world’s largest iPhone factory located in Zhengzhou, more than 20,000 new employees have left after this week’s Covid-related riots.

Their departure would complicate the company’s original goal of starting full production by the end of November, sparking concerns about Apple’s ability to ship products during the busy year-end holiday season.
