“I think that Djokovic, along with Nadal and Federer, go beyond being sports icons. They are cultural icons. Each of them could very well be the president of their respective countries, they have followers that go far beyond their respective countries: Serbia, Spain and Switzerland,” he said.

“The impact they have on tennis is huge, we will only really understand it when they retire. God willing I hope Novak and Rafa play at least a couple more years as we will all benefit from that, not just tennis. but sport in general,” he added.

Praise for Murray

Becker also remembered the fourth member of this select group: Andy Murray. “I would define it with one word: amazing. He didn’t expect him to come back so strong, especially physically, especially after his hip surgery. Seeing how he fights against all the opponents, how he is able to run through three sets, the great tennis that he is serving, even against Medvedev in the last final. He’s legendary, the Brit is doing it again, if he keeps it up I’m looking forward to Wimbledon. I will be very attentive in the next tournaments to see if he continues to win matches, although where I want to see him is on his favorite surface, the grass”, he said.

Becker won 49 singles and 15 doubles tournaments. In singles, the tennis player won six Grand Slam titles: Wimbledon in 1985, 1986 and 1989, the Australian Open in 1991 and 1996, and the 1989 United States Open. In Grand Slam he reached 10 finals and 18 semifinals, three of them at Roland Garros.

He won 13 Grand Prix Championship Series / ATP Masters Series titles, all on hard courts, plus 21 finals. He also claimed three titles at the Masters Grand Prix / ATP Tour World Championships in 1988, 1992 and 1995.
