Because of the Nord Stream, one of the tariffs in the bills of Ukrainians will increase 10 times

According to the expert, in the event of a gas reverse, Ukrainians’ bills will become much “heavier”.

Ukraine has no direct contracts for the supply of gas from Russia and the launch Nord Stream 2 may significantly affect the bills of Ukrainians.

About it in an interview “Voice.ua” economist Oleg Pendzin said.

“Ukraine does not have a direct contract for the supply of gas for its own needs from the Russian Federation – there is only a contract for the transit of the Russian Federation-Europe. GTS is a “pipe” that goes in one direction – from the Russian Federation to Europe. There are practically no reverse sections in this pipe,” – said the economist.

The expert recalled that Ukraine receives gas through the so-called virtual reverse.

“In order to understand how Ukraine is currently pumping gas from Europe with a “pipe” that is not technically adapted to this, you need to understand: Ukraine receives gas through the so-called virtual reverse. This means that at the end of the transit “pipe” (GTS) there is a Slovak or a Hungarian company that is a recipient of Russian gas. This company concludes an agreement with NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy that it sells part of this gas to Ukraine,” the expert noted.

According to the economist, this is gas that does not reach Europe.

“Ukraine, for the volume of gas purchased from this company, takes this gas from the transit “pipe” on the territory of Ukraine. This is gas that does not reach Europe. So you can take gas from the GTS in the Kharkiv region, Poltava region. And this gas immediately goes to distribution networks, and these networks bring gas to the end consumer. Now imagine that there is no such gas transit from the Russian Federation. This means that there is no gas for Ukrainians either. Therefore, the “pipe” will start working in the actual reverse: the gas flow will be turned towards the western border to the east. If this is not done, Ukrainians will not receive gas in eastern Ukraine,” Pendzin said.

The economist also recalled that now the pressure in the GTS is provided by the main “pipe”.

“It turns out this: Ukraine pumps transit Russian gas, the Russians pay for this transit in accordance with the contract valid until 2024, Ukraine takes part of the gas through the so-called virtual reverse, and high pressure is maintained in the main “pipe”. In this case, in fact, for the gas pressure in The Russians pay for the pipe, paying for the transit. In the bills of Ukrainians, the payment for this transit is approximately 1.5 hryvnias now,” the expert noted.

According to the expert, in the event of a gas reverse, Ukrainians’ bills will become much “heavier”.

“If the Russian “pipe” is cut off and the actual gas reverse is started, then not Gazprom, but Ukrainians will pay for the operation of large compressors. So, the cost of transporting gas in this case, according to some estimates, could increase 10 times, and Ukrainians will pay for it out of their own pockets – for the imported gas itself and for its expensive transportation. I admit that it will be many times more expensive than now,” the expert noted.

Nord Stream 2:

  • The Nord Stream 2 project provides for the construction and operation of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The gas pipeline passes bypassing Ukraine.
  • On September 10, 2021, Russia announced the completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
  • On September 23, 2021, it became known that the Congress approved sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
  • On October 4, gas began to fill the first string of the gas pipeline.
  • On November 15, 2021, the German Federal Network Agency (BundesNetzAgentur, BNetzA) granted the application of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine for participation in the certification process Nord Stream 2 AG, which is the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
  • The next day BNetzA suspended the certification process. The regulator came to the conclusion that certification is possible only after the operator brings its organizational and legal form in line with German law.
  • On November 27, 2021, information appeared in the media that the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 can start operating without certification. In this case, you will have to pay a fine of approximately 1 million euros.
  • On December 28, 2021, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock announced that Nord Stream 2 cannot be a commercial project.
  • January 13, 2022 US Senate rejected the draft sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
