The Chilean taekwondo fighter Fernanda Aguirre and the Dutch skateboarder Candy Jacobs are the first athletes to miss their competitions at the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to positive corona tests.

First, the National Olympic Committee of Chile announced on Wednesday (July 21, 2021) that Aguirre had tested positive on arrival. It then became known that the virus had also been detected in Jacobs in the Olympic Village.

Aguirre, however, has no symptoms and is in “good health”, as the Chilean NOK announced. However, the sportswoman was placed under a ten-day quarantine by the Japanese authorities, it said. Therefore, Aguirre, who was “devastated and very sad” on social media, could not take part in the Taekwondo competitions. Her trainer is also in isolation.

Jacobs missed Olympic skateboard premiere

For the 31-year-old Jacobs, the games are over before they even begin. “My heart is broken,” wrote the fourth place in the 2019 World Cup: “I feel healthy and have done everything in my power to prevent this scenario.”

According to Jacobs, all the necessary regulations have been met so that their skateboard teammates in Japan can compete in the Olympic premiere of their sport despite the incident. “I need some time for my broken heart to heal and for me to recover,” wrote Jacobs, who had to go into quarantine for ten days. The day before, she had posted photos and videos from the Olympic village in Tokyo in her Instagram story. The Dutch Keet Oldenbeuving and Roos Zwetsloot could also be seen doing joint activities. All three skateboarders always wore masks in the photos and videos.

Meanwhile 75 Olympic participants infected

Two days before the opening ceremony, the number of officially confirmed positive Covid-19 tests related to the games rose to 75, according to the organizing committee in the daily report published on Wednesday. There is also an American beach volleyball player among them. USA Volleyball confirmed a positive test, but did not name the person concerned. According to the organizers, an official in the athletes’ village also tested positive, he had twelve contact persons.

Four cases in the prefectures

On Tuesday (July 20th, 2021) the Czech team announced that after beach volleyball player Ondrej Perusic, Simon Nausch, coach of the beach volleyball players, had also tested positive. In addition to the 75 registered cases, there are four positive tests reported by the prefectures. However, the regional authorities are not required to report on corona cases related to the Olympics. The Tokyo Summer Games will open on Friday (23.07.2021).
