From a nutritional point of view, dried figs have a very high energy intake. They are rich in carbohydrates while they present proteins and lipids in marginal quantities. Dried figs have simple carbohydrates consisting of fructose, low biological value peptides and omega 3 and omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, beneficial for lipid metabolism and blood pressure.

The dried figs they are very rich in fiber, which contribute to reducing the glycemic index of the fruit, however already of medium size. The fibers of dried figs help maintain intestinal functions, prevent constipation, feed the good bacterial flora. Dried figs are rich in important mineral salts such as potassium, calcium, iron and phosphorus and in vitamins A and B.

Dried figs can be included in the diet of those who are intolerant to gluten or lactose which means that they are absent from these two constituents. But it must be done attention to eat dried figs: here’s what can happen.

Be careful with dried figs for a variety of reasons. First of all, those that we can find on the supermarket can contain food additives such as sulfur dioxide. The treated figs have significantly changed their nutritional characteristics. The use of additives and preservatives is not beneficial for health.

The considerable caloric density of dried figs is not ideal for those on a diet or who must lose weight. The large caloric intake of dried figs can promote obesity. Even the diabetic they must not eat dried figs because these foods are responsible for stimulating insulin. Dried figs also, being very rich in seeds, must be excluded from the diet for diverticulitis.

Dried figs: the recommended portions

We understand what they are the nutritional characteristics of dried figs but also because we must pay attention to their consumption and in which cases we must avoid eating them or inserting them in the diet. Those who love dried fruit and do not have any particular pathologies or follow dietary regimes aimed at reducing or controlling body weight, can eat dried figs without problems, without prejudice to following the right recommended daily portions.

Daily consumption of dried figs suggested by nutritionists is equal to a single portion of 30 grams. Dried figs, if there are no particular pathologies that prevent their consumption, can be beneficial for the body and prevent tumors such as colon cancer. In this case a preventive diet could include the weekly consumption of at least 5 portions of dried figs. Consumption in moderation is however always recommended for any food.
