BBL start without casting 46ers | Local sport

The basketball Bundesliga started the 2020/21 season without the Gießen 46ers. Ingo Freyer’s team recorded a corona case on Wednesday, so the home start against the MBC was canceled on Thursday.

The Gießen 46ers had to watch the BBL start on TV at the weekend. The team and trainer have been in a 14-day home quarantine since last Wednesday due to a professional corona case. Captain Brandon Thomas and Tim Uhlemann are not affected, as they paused during the last training sessions. If everything goes normally, the team of coach Freyer should intervene in the league for the first time with the home game against Ulm on November 21.

Meanwhile, there was criticism after the health authorities had quarantined three game cancellations. The BBL are now eight games behind. In the cup, five canceled matches, including three by defending champion Alba, have not yet been made up. Then there are the three games from the first BBL game day.

46ers managing director Michael Koch explained on Deutschlandfunk that there are two different standards in sport. There have also been positive corona cases in football – including at Bayern Munich. The team was not withdrawn from circulation there, and no 14-day quarantine was required for the team, stated Giessen’s boss.

He also confirmed again that the club had applied for financial aid because of the ghost games. “We live to the greatest extent from viewers, from VIP tickets. The advertising that is placed with us is also more local. We absolutely need viewers,” added Koch warningly with regard to the financial situation.

However, there was great news for Giessen’s playmaker Bjarne Kraushaar. The 21-year-old self-grown man was nominated by national coach Henrik Rödl for the 18-man squad of the senior national team for the upcoming European Championship qualifying games. “I am very happy that I have moved into the overall German national team. That is a huge honor and a great incentive for me to keep working on myself,” said Kraushaar.

Meanwhile, defending champion Alba Berlin started the new season with a home win. The double winner beat the Skyliners from Frankfurt on Sunday after a dominant first half with 79:66 (49:22). In the evening Bayern Munich fought 90:78 (44:40) against Rasta Vechta.

Alba, who has already passed the quarantine, gave the Skyliners no chance. Luke Sikma was convincing (14 points) against Frankfurt, which had to isolate players during the week but ultimately had no corona cases. However, Alba made a 0-23 negative run at the end of the game.
