As the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) announced on Friday (February 26th, 2021), the away game scheduled for Saturday by promoted Chemnitz at the BG Göttingen must be postponed at short notice due to a positive corona test with a Chemnitz player.
The Chemnitz team was quarantined by the responsible health department until at least March 6th. The unnamed person concerned is already in isolation, all other players and team members tested negative.
Another BBL team completely in quarantine after a corona case
This means that the next match will be canceled in the BBL after teams have been subjected to exercise restrictions due to positive corona tests or have been sent completely in isolation. Even before the international break, s.Oliver Würzburg’s games against Syntainics MBC Weißenfels and against JobStairs Giessen 46ers could not take place after a player from Würzburg had tested positive. Although there were no other positive cases in the Würzburg team, players and coaches were only allowed to stay in their own apartment or in the training center and commute between the two locations by order of the health department.
BBL boss Holz: “No equal treatment” in the Corona practice
The practice of the health authorities thus deviates once again from football, where games continue to take place in the team despite individual positive cases. In basketball, ice hockey and handball, on the other hand, entire teams are repeatedly sent into quarantine. In Wolfsburg, it was even the same authority that sent the DEL team into isolation because of positive tests, while VfL footballers were allowed to continue playing in the team after corona cases. Only last week, BBL boss Stefan Holz and Viktor Szilagyi, managing director at THW Kiel, complained about unequal treatment compared to professional football, despite similar hygiene concepts.
