Bayreuth Festival Appoints New General Manager to Steer Financial Future
Bayreuth, Germany – In a significant move just ahead of its renowned opera spectacle, the Bayreuth Festival has appointed Matthias Rädel as its new General Manager, a decision unanimously approved by the Festival’s board of directors. Rädel, currently the deputy managing director and senior controller at the German Opera Berlin as 2006, is set to bring a wealth of financial and managerial expertise to the iconic Green Hill.
Bavaria’s Minister of Art, Markus Blume (CSU), and Minister of Culture, Wolfram Weimer, announced the appointment following a board meeting, highlighting Rädel’s “profiled theater management with comprehensive and many years of experience in the buisness area, combined with a strong content and artistic interest.”
This strategic appointment signals a new direction for the festival, aiming to bolster its financial stability and operational efficiency. Minister Weimer described Rädel as “the Right Choice for bayreuth,” emphasizing his proven ability to navigate and implement necessary transformation processes. “He will meet the current challenges and thus lead the Bayreuth Festival into the future,” Weimer stated.
The introduction of a dedicated General Manager is a key component of a structural reform initiated last year. Previously, festival director Katharina Wagner held dual responsibilities as both artistic director and managing director. This new structure, supported by former Minister of Culture Claudia Roth and Minister Blume, is designed to allow Wagner to “concentrate even more strongly on the artistic direction of the festival.” Ulrich Jagels, who has served as the second managing director as 2021, will continue in his role.
The restructuring was also a crucial condition set by the federal government for increasing its stake in the festival company. This move comes at a time when the festival faced financing challenges, particularly with the Society of Friends of Bayreuth.
Katharina Wagner expressed her confidence in her new colleague, noting Rädel’s ability to bridge “theory and practice, management and culture, administrative responsibility and intellectual standards.” Chairman of the board of directors, Georg von Waldenfels, is slated to lead the contract negotiations with Rädel.
This appointment is expected to provide a robust financial framework, enabling the Bayreuth Festival to continue its legacy of artistic excellence while ensuring its long-term sustainability.
