Bayern confirms Gravenberch arrival and pays Ajax at least 18.5 million euros | NOW

Ryan Gravenberch makes the switch from Ajax to Bayern Munich, the German record champion confirmed on Monday. The transfer involves an amount of at least 18.5 million euros.

The transfer fee can rise to a total of 24 million euros via bonuses. Twenty-year-old Gravenberch still had a one-year contract in Amsterdam and had previously made it clear that he did not want to renew.

The midfielder has signed a five-year contract with Bayern Munich. In southern Germany, he becomes a teammate of Noussair Mazraoui, who also made the switch from Amsterdam to Munich this summer.

For some time it seemed that Gravenberch would do the same. The ten-time international of Orange was in Munich on Saturday to complete the transfer and his arrival was already confirmed by technical director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Gravenberch and Mazraoui are Bayern’s first two summer signings, which saw defender Niklas Sule and midfielder Corentin Tolisso leave. It also seems very likely that top striker Robert Lewandowski will no longer be active at the Bundesliga club next season.

Gravenberch becomes tenth Dutchman at Bayern

Gravenberch becomes the tenth Dutchman in the service of Bayern Munich, which crowned itself champion of Germany for the 32nd time last season. He follows in the footsteps of Roy Makaay, Arjen Robben and Joshua Zirkzee, among others. The latter has a contract until the summer of 2023.

“When the Bayern Munich offer came, I didn’t have to think twice about it,” Gravenberch said on the club’s website. “Players from all over the world want to play for this club. Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Gravenberch played a total of 103 matches for Ajax and became national champion three times (in 2018/2019, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022). He also won the KNVB Cup twice (in 2018/2019 and 2020/2021). He scored the opening goal in both the 2021 and 2022 cup finals.

The midfielder entered Ajax’s youth academy at the age of eight and made his debut in the first team in 2018 as a sixteen-year-old visiting PSV (3-0 loss). He thus became the youngest player in Ajax’s main squad ever, a record that is still in his name.
