BAWAG Group supports Volkshilfe in their work for disadvantaged children

“Poverty and education are usually inherited. For over 300,000 children and young people in Austria, this means worse opportunities. Corona has drastically exacerbated this disadvantage through homeschooling, unemployment and short-time work. This is exactly where we want to start and provide concrete support. ”, Ewald Sacher, President of Volkshilfe Austria, announces Volkshilfe’s new educational project. “A big thank you also to the BAWAG Group, which has supported this important initiative as a long-term partner.”

Generation Corona “actively support access to education

The BAWAG Group is once again assuming its social responsibility and, together with the central works council, has launched an internal appeal for donations to support educational concerns of children affected by poverty. Numerous employees, members of the management board, the supervisory board and the works council responded to the call. A total of 150,000 euros were raised for Volkshilfe.

Enver Sirucic, CFO and Deputy CEO of BAWAG Group, explains: “Education plays a major role and, above all, supports young people in making self-determined decisions – including financial matters. This Volkshilfe social project is therefore a matter close to our hearts as a bank. I am very pleased that we can help children at risk of poverty in these challenging times and that the entire BAWAG Group workforce has made a joint contribution to equal opportunities. For us, Volkshilfe is a long-standing partner that we have always been happy to support in the past with the financing of projects via our crowdfunding platform. “

In the Corona crisis, children at risk of poverty are increasingly losing touch at school. That is why Volkshilfe will use the generous donations exclusively to support specific educational projects for children at risk of poverty. The aim is to support the acquisition of laptops or desks, as well as learning support and therapy for children with increased needs.

“We can’t just take Corona out of the equation. The financial disadvantage, which has been scientifically proven to have an impact on learning success, but which it does fight, ”concludes Erich Fenninger, Director of Volkshilfe Austria.
