Foto: dpa/Christie’s Press Office – – The renowned autumn auctions of the major auction houses in New York are just around the corner. This year a particularly large number of expensive works of art are going under the hammer – including the Warhol, a Monet, a Picasso and a mobile by Alexander Calder. A portrait that US artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) once painted of his colleague Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) could fetch more than $ 20 million at auction in New York. The portrait, created in 1982, will be auctioned at the traditional autumn auction in November, Christie’s auction house announced on Monday. The work came from the possession of the US billionaire and art collector Peter Brant. Warhol and Basquiat helped shape the New York art scene in the 1980s and were friends. – Christie’s also plans to auction a work by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). The “Mousquetaire à la pipe II” made in 1968 could bring in around 30 million dollars, the auction house said on Tuesday. A work by the French impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926) is also on offer. The “Au jardin, la famille de l’artiste”, created in 1875, could bring in between 12 and 18 million dollars. The work was last auctioned in 1984 and has been in a private collection ever since. – Competitor Sotheby’s has, among other things, a mobile by the US artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976), which could bring in up to 15 million dollars, and a work by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, which is estimated at around 12 million dollars. – – .
