Basketball players will miss Captain Hruban in the European Championship qualifiers

Hruban prefers the family. “We had a son a few weeks ago and sometimes basketball is just second. It’s the first time I’ve missed a national team event in ten years. It was a very difficult decision, but I know the boys can do it without me, even if it will be a very strange feeling to watch the match of the Czech national team on television, “Hruban said in a press release of the Czech Basketball Federation.

Coach Ronen Ginzburg has seven players out of twelve in the absence of Hruban and Auda and Balvín’s return, who won a historic sixth place at the World Championships in China last September. In addition to the former captain Pavel Pumprla, who ended his national team career after the championship, the biggest star is missing Tomáš Satoranský from Chicago from the NBA and Blake Schilb from Reims.

Krejčí was drafted into the NBA as the fifth Czech

“It was a challenge for us to put together a set. Not only because of the covid, but also because of the injuries,” Ginzburg said. He is glad that Balvín is returning to the team. “If he passes all the covid tests, he will join us. This is great news, because it is really important for the team. It is still the future of the team for the next five or six years,” the coach said.

Vít Krejčí from Zaragoza, whose rights were won by Oklahoma City Thunder in Wednesday’s NBA draft, and Nymburk’s Petr Šafarčík, who were not missing in the February matches against Denmark and Lithuania, are out of the game due to injuries. Richard Bálint from Brno, Dalibor Fait from Ústí nad Labem, Luboš Kovář from Nymburk, Patrick Samoura from USK Prague and František Váňa from Olomouc can make their debuts.

“I’d rather have more players who already have something behind them. But we understand the absence and it’s a chance for young people,” Ginzburg said. “But if I really miss anyone, it’s Vojta (Hruban). Because he does a great job and he’s a great leader,” added an Israeli coach who recently acquired Czech citizenship.

“One thing is a sporty point of view, but in my opinion we will mainly miss his character traits,” added team manager Michal Šob to Hruban’s absence. “We were not enthusiastic about it, but we want to build the national team as a wider family, so for this reason we understood his decision,” he added.

The national team will start meeting from Saturday in Prague and on Monday will move to the “bubble” in Vilnius. The Czechs will go there again after nine months, in February they lost the domestic selection of 89:97. Before that, they defeated Denmark 75:71 in Pardubice. Next week on Friday from 15:30 CET they will invite Belgium, which they were originally supposed to host at home. At the same time, they will face Denmark on Sunday, which was to host Ginzburg’s choice.
