Bas-Saguenay invaded by illegal campers

Like everywhere else, campers who set up in places where camping is not allowed took the Bas-Saguenay by storm this summer.

In Petit-Saguenay, several illegal campers take over the territory.

“It happened after someone emptied their septic tank on the public road. Sometimes, waste is found, but on the whole, people are respectful, ”explains the mayor of Petit-Saguenay, Philôme La France.

And yet there is no shortage of campgrounds.

“We almost always have room,” says Village Vacances Petit-Saguenay general manager Frank Turcotte.

At this point, some even go so far as to deliberately take the road to the beach to camp there rather than reserving a plot a little higher.

“People settle near the beach to watch the scenery, but also because they don’t want to pay,” explains Frank Turcotte.

“We understand that people want to come, because it’s beautiful, but you just have to call a campsite in our area and there will be room”, insists Philôme La France.

In L’Anse-Saint-Jean, the phenomenon of illegal campers is also present.

“People mostly camp in parking lots,” explains Lucien Martel, mayor of the place.

But in this municipality, the campsites are practically full. Visitors often have no choice.

“It’s always full, we sometimes have to install trailers in the parking lot, because when there is no more space, we cannot invent any,” says Sarah Dufresne, employee at Camping de L’Anse.

But here, we haven’t seen any deplorable gestures.

“There is no excess, people are civilized, but we are monitoring the situation closely. We don’t want it to become like the Gaspé, ”explains Mr. Martel.
