Czech Tennis Player Nikola Bartůňková Reaches Semifinals in Guadalajara After Upset Victory
Guadalajara, Mexico – September 13, 2025 – Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartůňková has advanced to the semifinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara, defeating defending champion Magda Frech of Poland 7-5, 6-4. The win marks a significant milestone in the young player’s career,coming after a six-month doping suspension and representing only her third main draw appearance on the WTA tour.
Bartůňková, currently ranked 142nd in the live rankings, overcame a challenge from Frech, who is nearly 300 places higher in the rankings. The Prague native secured a strong start in the first set,leading 2-0,before Frech rallied to take four consecutive games. bartůňková ultimately regained control, closing out the set 7-5 after 49 minutes.
The second set saw Frech initially take a 2-0 lead, but Bartůňková quickly responded, leveling the score and eventually securing a 4-3 advantage. She maintained her momentum, winning the set 6-4 and the match in one hour and 30 minutes.
Bartůňková has yet to drop a set throughout the tournament,having previously defeated Darja Vďmanová in the prior round.This Guadalajara run represents the 19-year-old’s largest career success to date.
