“Mesto” – sad. With this simple statement, each movement beginning of the sixth and last string quartet by Bartók is overwritten. Not only the approaching and finally breaking out Second World War preoccupied Bartók this year; 1939 is also the year of his mother’s death. Each movement is preceded by a melody – like a kind of ritornello – a melody that increases in importance and harmonization from movement to movement, until it finally, in the fourth and last movement, unlike Bartók’s original plan, the entire event will determine.
Thomas Wally, who, in addition to his work as a freelance composer and violinist, is also active as a senior lecturer in music theory at the Vienna University of Music, looks at Belá Bartók’s sixth string quartet, in particular this melody entitled “Mesto”, from an (auditory) analytical perspective: What to hear we when we hear this work? What can we pay attention to? What are specifics that we should pay attention to? The listeners are provided with analytical tools with the help of which this music can be perceived with a sharper focus.
