Barcelona eyed Dani Olmo, but got Luuk de Jong

Jakarta

Barcelona turned out to be aiming Dani Olmo ahead of the close of the summer transfer window this year, but failed to get it. Olmo explained why the transfer failed.

Dani Olmo is an attacking midfielder from Spain, but his professional football career started outside his homeland. Olmo made his professional debut with Dinamo Zagreb and is currently playing in the German Bundesliga for RB Leipzig.

The 23-year-old appeared with the Spanish national team at Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics. Barcelona then smitten and tried to get Olmo’s signature towards the end of the transfer market.

Barcelona in the end failed to get Olmo. The player also explained why the Blaugrana were unable to bring him from RB Leipzig.

“There’s no time to think about transfers, it all happened too fast. For now I’m thinking about the season with Leipzig, and I’m fine here,” Olmo told Suddeutsche Zeitung, quoted by Marca.

“I really want to play, fight in international tournaments again. That’s my motivation,” he continued.

Barcelona then borrowed Luuke de Jong from Sevilla at the end of the transfer market after releasing Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid. Barcelona’s sporting director, Mateu Alemany, even spoke about Olmo’s transfer attempts during Luuk de Jong’s presentation.

“We were able to talk about a lot of players in the last days of the market, we started negotiations with players who could help us in the final third (opponent defence),” said Alemany.

“I don’t want to talk about professionals who aren’t here, but we have some targets and some players under control. A lot of things can happen, but in the end Luuk de Jong came as our striker.”
