FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao take on the Spanish league. You are taking action against the billion-dollar deal with an investor.
As the three clubs announced, the billion-dollar TV deal with the Luxembourg investor CVC is being challenged. The clubs said the deal broke the law and was “disrespectful”. However, the three clubs left open which steps the trio would take.
In a general assembly on August 12th, 38 clubs had voted for the deal with CVC. Accordingly, the investor will receive 10.95 percent of the income from all TV rights of the two highest leagues for the next 50 years, for which 2.6 billion euros will now flow to the clubs.
Four clubs – including Barcelona and Real – had initially voted against. Therefore, the clubs should not be covered by the deal. The Spanish league wanted to persuade Barcelona to agree with the prospect of a contract extension with superstar Lionel Messi. The contract with the Argentine superstar could have been registered if Barca got involved in the financial deal. However, the Catalans refused.
