Barangaroo‘s Marrinawi cove Beach⁣ to Close for Three Months for accessibility Upgrades

Sydney,NSW – Marrinawi Cove,Barangaroo’s popular harbour⁤ beach, will close for three months starting ‍next week to facilitate upgrades aimed at improving accessibility and expanding the swimming area. ‌The closure, announced Friday, will allow for construction to proceed‌ on improvements designed to make the beach more inclusive for elderly and less mobile residents.

The upgrades are part‍ of a broader government initiative‌ to enhance accessibility along Sydney’s harbour ‍foreshore. While the‌ temporary closure will ⁣impact recreational swimmers, officials say the long-term benefits of a more accessible‍ and expanded swimming area‍ outweigh the inconvenience. The project reflects growing community demand for more harbour swimming spots and aligns⁢ with efforts to reconnect people with the waterfront.

According to a statement, the upgrades will focus on improving entry⁤ and exit points to the water, making it easier for people⁤ with limited mobility to ⁤enjoy the ⁣harbour. Yasmina Bonnet, of the ‍Millers Point Resident Action Group, welcomed the news, stating her community had been advocating for improved accessibility at Marrinawi Cove for some time.

“Sydneysiders love a good harbour swim. If the larger Nawi⁤ Cove, just near Barangaroo metro station,⁤ was also swimmable in ‍the future, that would be fabulous,” ⁤Bonnet said.

The New South⁣ Wales government is also investigating the possibility of opening Nawi⁣ Cove⁢ for ‌swimming, potentially with⁣ a floating pool, though a spokesman for⁣ Minister for Infrastructure Jack‌ Kamper indicated on Friday there⁣ were no immediate updates⁤ on those plans. Kamper has ⁤previously stated ⁣the government is “committed ⁣to ensuring Barangaroo ⁣remains a vibrant, accessible foreshore that reconnects people with the harbour.”

Community‌ groups and the City of Sydney continue to advocate for additional harbour swimming locations, including at Pirrama Park in Pyrmont, Beare park at ‌Elizabeth Bay, and Glebe’s⁢ Blackwattle Bay.
