Banksy auctions work to raise money for British health …

The British artist Banksy is going to auction one of his works and hopes to raise more than 3 million pounds (3.5 million euros) for the British health service, the NHS.

In May 2020, during the first corona wave, Banksy had donated a work entitled ‘Game Changer’ to Southampton hospital in the south of England. The work depicts in black and white a boy who has thrown his Batman and Superman toys in the trash and is instead playing with a nurse doll, wearing a cape and a mouth mask.

The anonymous artist has now decided to auction the original work to raise money for the NHS. A replica of the work remains in the hospital. The work is ‘a personal tribute’ to the heroes of healthcare, says auction house Christie’s. Banksy’s’ Game changer ‘was a ray of hope for Southampton hospital staff and patients and the artist now wants to auction it off for the NHS,’ said Katharine Arnold, who is responsible for post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s in Europe.

The work will go under the hammer on March 23 and is estimated to yield between 2.5 and 3.5 million pounds.

Earlier this week, the artist Banksy gave a rare insight into his working method. In the video below he shows how the mural on a prison wall in Reading came about.
