Banks Start Firing Employees Who Don’t Want Vaccines

Jakarta

Citigroup Inc employees in the United States (US) who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 until January 14 will be forced to take unpaid leave and may even be fired until the end of the month.

Quoted from Reuters, stated unless the employee can provide a medical reason for the vaccination. Banks in the US had already announced to implement strict rules related to vaccinations in October.

This is done because the financial industry is one sector that can meet many people. In addition, this vaccination is also expected to make employees return to the office safely.

More than 90% of Citigroup employees have complied with these rules. This policy issued by Citigroup is to comply with US government regulations that require all workers to be vaccinated.

“You can go to another division at Citi as long as you comply with the vaccination policy. If you haven’t then we ask you to get vaccinated immediately,” the memo reads.

Other banks such as Goldman Sachs & Co., Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co. have also asked unvaccinated employees to work from home, but there are no plans to lay off workers yet.

Currently vaccination is a problem that makes a scene in the US. Similar to many countries in the world, there are people who strongly reject vaccines because they think it is just a business.

Even the US Supreme Court is also handling a request to reject Biden’s mandate that a company with more than 100 employees must inject vaccines for its employees every week.

Lawyer from Hall Booth Smith Law Firm, Jacqueline Voronov said that the policy of dismissing unvaccinated employees is the company’s right as long as there are exceptions for certain conditions.

He said this vaccination step was to protect employees from COVID-19 attacks that could disrupt company operations.

A few months ago United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby fired 200 of his 67,000 employees for disobeying company rules. In addition, many hospitals in the US are firing their employees.
