Bankruptcy at the Klier hairdresser chain – what happens to the employees?

The Hairdresser chain KLIER is since November 30th, 2020 insolvent, as it became known on December 1st, 2020.

Klier operates hairdressing shops of the same name and the chains “styleboxx”, “Hairworld” and “Cut & Color”, as well as the delivery service for hairdressing equipment called “Cosmo”.

In addition to around 1,400 Hairdressing Salons in Germany there are numerous other locations in other European countries.

Brands like Essanelle or Super Cut are also included.

Frisör Klier GmbH claims to be the largest system hairdresser in Germany.

As a result of the sharp drop in sales due to the corona pandemic, the company applied for protective shield proceedings in spring 2020 and put the branch network to the test.

In the protective shield proceedings, Klier’s remaining assets were initially protected from outside access.

The aim of the protective shield proceedings is to search for further solutions without formal bankruptcy being filed.

The management remains in office, but a trustee is placed at their side.

Klier announced in September that they wanted to “sustainably renovate and position themselves for the future on their own responsibility”.

In the course of 2020, some unprofitable branches were then closed.

However, Klier’s measures were not enough.

Now von Klier has filed for insolvency before the Wolfsburg District Court as an insolvency court.

Slumps in sales due to the corona pandemic led to this step, which even state bridging aid could not remedy.

Klier was particularly affected by the shutdown in spring 2020, as numerous hairdressers had to close completely

Klier employs a total of approx. 9,200 employees.

How many of them will lose their jobs is currently unclear.

The trustee from the protective proceedings – Silvio Höfer – did not want to comment on Klier’s prospects.

The Verdi union calls for the interests of employees to be taken into account and warns of massive job cuts.

Currently stand according to media reports 450 of the 1,400 hairdressing salons on the verge of collapse and with them the workers employed there.

That would mean 15-20% of the workers up to 1,900 the termination to get.

Many workers wonder whether they can get a severance pay and how to get the best compensation.

There are no regulations and certainly no legal regulations about how high a severance payment should be.

The amount of the severance payment that the employer pays you is exclusively a matter of negotiation.

But there is a so-called standard severance payment which is calculated as follows:

Calculation formula: gross wages x years of employment x 0.5

Note: round up to one year from 6 months of employment
